Justin Wilcox Earns Buick Achievers National Scholarship!
September 19, 2014
Justin Wilcox, a South Shore graduate (2014) has earned the Buick Achievers National Scholarship. Justin is one of only 100 students worldwide to win this award this year. Following is some information about the scholarship, which is renewable for up to four years for Justin.
The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is one of the largest in the country. Since its inception in 2011, the program has provided more than $21 million to 3,300 students desiring to study STEM fields, as well as those related to the auto industry. Many of the recipients are the first in their families to pursue a secondary education.
“With U.S. student loan debt now totaling more than $1 trillion, the impact the Buick Achievers Scholarship will have on these students is immeasurable,” said Vivian Pickard, president, GM Foundation. “They will have the freedom to attend and excel in college without the financial pressures most students face.”
The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program supports students interested in pursuing careers in the automotive and related industry and who will be studying science, technology, engineering, math, design and select business fields. This comes at a time where there are only 1,472 math and science graduates for every 100,000 employed 25- to 34-year-olds in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
As one of the largest scholarship programs in the country, the Buick Achievers Scholarship is distinguished by its renewable aspect – 100 nationwide students receive up to $25,000 a year, renewable for up to four years and one additional year for qualified five-year engineering programs. Additionally, 1,000 students receive a one-time $2,000 award.
The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is one of the premiere scholarship programs in the country,” said Barbara Weber, vice president, Scholarship America, the nation’s largest nonprofit, private sector scholarship and educational support organization. “The high-dollar value and renewability of the awards will provide recipients with a tremendous benefit throughout their college careers.”
Congratulations to Justin for winning this outstanding scholarship!!
