Return of Spring Sports

Return of Spring Sports

Leila Tuura, Reporter

Along with the warmer weather has come the return of middle and high school spring sports. South Shore students and coaches were excited to start the first spring sport–high school track and field. High school track and field usually has a big turnout and 19 athletes have joined again this year. In the past, South Shore track and field has co-opted with Washburn students, but this year South Shore’s team consists only of members from our school. Practice has also started for softball, baseball, golf, and middle school track and field. The softball team is unsure of whether they have enough participants to form a team because unlike previous years, they are also not co-opting with Washburn. With their current 7 players, they plan on playing in two scrimmages against the Washburn-Bayfield team unless their numbers increase and they can play actual games. The rest of the sports teams have enough members and are ready for their games and meets to begin. Per usual, the outdoor spring sport competitors must be very flexible because of the unpredictable weather. Softball and baseball have started their practices indoors due to the snow on their outdoor practice fields. Track and field has been practicing inside and outside, depending on the day’s weather.

Some students are participating in multiple sports this spring, which is a huge accomplishment and it shows their dedication to South Shore athletics. These athletes have added responsibilities of making it to all of the necessary practices and games/meets, while also trying their best to find success in more than one sport. South Shore athletes will be working hard over the next few months to achieve their personal and team goals. They are looking forward to the snow melting so they can play their sports outdoors again. We hope the community will continue to show their support for these amazing athletes during their spring sports seasons!
