On March 5, South Shore’s boys basketball team competed against Mellen at home. The fans and team were both excited to see if senior Koy Nelson could break yet another South Shore boys basketball record. Last year Koy hit the 1,000 point mark and he’s been building upon that all season. Earlier this year, he said “My goal for this upcoming season is to break the all-time scoring record of 1542.” The previous record was set by Jeffrey Lahti in 1995. During this game against Mellen, Koy had the opportunity to pass Jeffrey in total career points. Halfway through the game, the crowd knew Koy was getting close to making his 1542nd point. When he finally made the shot to pass the record, the crowd went wild. Koy Nelson said, “It felt pretty good to beat the record because it’s been a long term goal of mine. I’m very grateful for my teammates for finding me when I’m open and giving me opportunities to score. I’m also grateful for my coaching staff for always encouraging me to be better.” Koy ended the game with 39 points and since then, he’s upped his career points to 1600.

In addition to setting the new career points record, Koy broke a couple of other records this year. In a game against Bayfield at home, he surpassed the record for most points in a game (which was previously held by himself) with 52 points. During this game, he also broke South Shore’s record for most three-pointers in a game with 12 threes made out of 15. That’s 80% three-point accuracy!

With an average of 31.2 points per game this season, Koy hopes to reach 1800 career points by the end of his senior season. The boys have four more regular season games before regionals start on March 1st. We hope the fans will continue to support Koy and the rest of the boys basketball team to see what else they can accomplish this year! Congratulations, Koy!
