South Shore 5th grade art students have completed clay cupcake sculptures. The students were introduced to the artist Wayne Thiebaud and the Pop art movement that used everyday objects as subject matter. We observed and discussed how Thiebaud uses delicious desserts as subjects in his paintings. With this as inspiration, students used the pinch pot method to create the bottom of their cupcakes and used the coil method to create the swirl of frosting on top. The students finished their sculptures with acrylic paint and a plate to serve the cupcakes on!
