November 1st was the annual fall sports banquet. This banquet is held every year to honor the teams and individual athletes that dedicated their time to a fall sport. This year South Shore had boys and girls cross country team, middle school cross country, girls volleyball team, and middle school girls basketball team. During the banquet, their accomplishments were highlighted.

Middle school girls basketball was separated into two teams, 7th and 8th grade. Each team finished the season 13-2. The 8th grade only lost to Ashland twice by a combined point total of 6. Lily Truchon led the 8th-grade team with a total of 279 points and Beau Reijo following with 132. Lily Truchon, the 8th grade point leader was very happy with the way her last middle school season ended. “I think our team had a great season. We all improved and I am excited for high school next year!” Emily Montgomery led the 7th grade team with 144 and Paige Lahti followed close behind with a total of 126. Overall the girls all worked hard and their season stats and record showed it!

The high school cross country teams also had quite an exciting season. This year it was their turn to host the conference meet along with the sectional meet. They participated in a total of 11 meets. This year the team consisted of two girls and three guys. Natalie Knaack and Abby Lahti represented well for the Cardinals this year. They both ended the season with an all-conference honorable mention award. Sawyer Schierman, Dante Ray, and Ryan Durst all finished strong and competed well in the final sectional meet. Sawyer even finished with his personal best of 21:30 which is amazing! “It was the best season yet because I had 6+ years of experience behind me.” The middle school cross country team also had a great season. They competed in a total of 6 meets. This years team was quite big compared to other seasons. Carter Lulich, an 8th grader, broke his personal best by placing 4th in the Copper Falls meet. “It was fun but it was very challenging for me to accomplish the goal of getting top ten every meet.” The team also came very close to receiving first place.

Finally, high school girls volleyball made history this year. This was the first year the varsity team came out of the first round of regionals in eight years! The girls defeated the Northwood Evergreens in the first round and then sadly lost the second round in Mercer. The final record was 11-14. Rylee Nicoletti led the team in kills with 131 and had the best hitting percentage at 38. Morgan Rock led the team in aces with 68 and digs with 95. Myla Lahti led the team in assists with 295. Morgan Rock and Myla Lahti also received all-conference honorable mention. The girls had an amazing season that ended with a good fight.

Fall sports have come to an end, but don’t be sad! Winter sports are starting soon and there will be much more action! Girls and boys basketball started already and middle school boys basketball is wrapping up and middle school girls volleyball is about to begin. Congratulations on good seasons to all fall athletes and good luck to winter athletes!
