With school starting this fine fall, so has our fall sports. The girls’ high school volleyball team started practice two weeks before school even started. Since then, the team has been working hard to meet their goals and make dreams come true for this season. On only the second week of practice, the team had two scrimmages lined up. The first one against the Bayfield Trollers. Now, if you are a fan of the volleyball team, you know that they suffered a nail-biting loss in the first round of the 2016 Regionals against the Trollers. The Trollers took the first two sets, but the Cardinals came back hard and won the next two sets. Sadly, they did not win the fifth set and that was the end of their season. With this loss in mind, the Cardinals came into this scrimmage ready to dominate. A new year is a blank slate, and they were ready to take it

On only the second week of practice, the team had two scrimmages lined up. The first scrimmage took place August 22nd against the Bayfield Trollers on their home court. A new year is a blank slate, and they were ready to take it all and take it all is what they did. The Cardinals took an easy win, sweeping the Trollers in 3 sets.Next was the scrimmage against the Drummond LumberJills. Drummond has been notorious for their well-rounded volleyball team over the years. Last year, the Cardinals beat Drummond on their home court. This wouldn’t seem like a big deal, but with the ranking of Drummond vs South Shore, it was quite the upset. Although the team won because they outplayed the LumberJills, they had to hear news stories saying they only won because the Drummond team had an “off night.” Yet again, the Cardinals were ready to show who they are this year and swept them in three easy sets.

The second scrimmage was August 24th against the Drummond LumberJills. Drummond has been recognized for their well-rounded volleyball team over the years. Last year, the Cardinals beat Drummond on their home court. This wouldn’t seem like a big deal, but Drummond was ranked significantly higher in conference play than South Shore making it quite the upset. Although the team won because they outplayed the LumberJills, they had to hear news stories saying they only won because the Drummond team had an “off night.” Say what you will, but once again, the Cardinals were ready to show who they are this year and swept them in three easy sets.

With the school year well under way and in-season games started, the team went to Hurley on Thursday, September 7th. The Cardinals played hard and again took the win in just three swift sets. Next was a home game against the Ironwood Devils. Sadly, the Cardinals could not beat them and had to take a loss on the night. This week they played the Mellen Granite Diggers in Mellen. Mellen took the first two sets. However, in an intense and constant volley game, the Cardinals came back to beat the Granite Diggers in the 3rd set. After a rough and tiring set, Mellen took the overall win and beat them in the fourth set.

With two tough losses and only one win, the team is ready for redemption and has the perfect time and place for it. This Saturday, September 16th, they are hosting their home tournament. Multiple teams from the conference and some from surrounding districts will be traveling to play in this tournament. The team is ready and prepared to win their games! There will be concessions and constant games being played. If you are interested, don your Cardinal gear, come support the team this Saturday and watch some great games! Go Big Red!
