Several Business Education students, including Tianna Carpenter, who participated in Employability Skills, Alyssa Kavajecz, who participated in Accounting, Zachary Hipsher, who participated in Microsoft Power Point, Caitlyn Thompson, who participated in Microsoft Excel and Keyboarding, Morgan Sorenson, who participated in Microsoft Word, and Kellie Rock, who also participated in Microsoft Word, traveled to WITC in Rice Lake, WI, to take part in the annual Business Skills Competition. Along with their adviser, Ms. Brigid J. Ripley, the students left at an early time of 6:15 a.m. and arrived at WITC around 9 o’clock a.m. Their day started off with meeting in the conference room, where many students from other schools also sat and waited for their day to start. The students were sent to specific rooms to compete in their chosen disciplines. In her Employability Skills test, Tianna Carpenter went through an interview process as she would for a job. She was asked questions, had to create a resume and more! Talking face to face as a test is much different than doing all your work on an computer, which is what most of the other tests involved. The time frames of the competitions varied, from the Employability Skills test being less than 10 minutes, to the Microsoft Word test to being almost an hour long. After the students had finished their tests, they ate lunch and listened to guest speakers talk about their WITC experiences. The students then departed from the college and made their way back to Port Wing. The results of the competitions are as follows: Caitlyn Thompson received second in Excel and also typed 62 wpm, landing her in the top ten for that competition. Zachary Hipsher also received second and Tianna Carpenter earned a third place. Senior, Kellie Rock, told us about the experience. “It was my second year going. I believed I learned a lot by going. It is a good opportunity to learn Microsoft programs. It is cool to see a knew college as well! Overall, it was a fun experience,” she said. The Wisconsin Business Skills Competition is an excellent event and will surely have South Shore students participating in it in years to come.
